Australian artist Roger K has unveiled his deeply personal new single, “Please Don’t Put It on Me,” an emotionally charged release that examines the pressures, trauma and expectations placed on children.
Blending cinematic alternative R&B, dark pop, soulful vocals and trap-inspired production, Roger describes the sound as Emo Alt R&B or Emo Trap. The track presents an adult voice expressing the feelings of a child who has been forced to carry burdens beyond their years.
Inspired by Roger’s reflections on childhood instability, incarceration and the long-term impact of trauma, the song asks an important question: what could change if someone listened to a child before their pain developed into something more destructive?
The repeated plea, “Please don’t put it on me / Don’t you know I can’t breathe,” captures the emotional suffocation caused by family expectations, financial and academic pressure, cultural conflict, violence and war.
Roger, an Australian artist of Sri Lankan heritage, has spent 20 years gigging before beginning his solo journey. He wrote, arranged, performed, produced, mixed and mastered the track himself.
A self-directed animated visualiser accompanies the release, using reimagined Banksy-inspired imagery to depict children confronted by authority, conflict and displacement. Together, the song and visualiser encourage adults to reflect on the weight they place on the next generation.
